DIY Christmas Gift Idea – Butterfly Clips

Magnetic butterfly clips are inexpensive DIY Christmas gift ideas you can make and give away as handcrafted presents. This multipurpose decorative item can be used at home or in the office. Very often these clips can be found in my kitchen pantry to fasten things that don’t have a way to close after its been opened like packages of flour, sugar, cereal, or chip and cookie sacks.

In my office, these clips were used to keep documents together on my desk, it has also been used as a small paperweight, or to clip a small memo at eye level, either on a filing cabinet door or magnetic board.

There is hardly a time when these clips are not in use, however, seldom, it happens, so I place unused clips somewhere close by on display!

Butterfly clips are very popular amongst family and friends! it is both an eye catcher and conversational starter. It is expected that a butterfly or two will fly away with our guests!

If butterflies have safety pins on them, use a wire cutter to remove them, prior to starting your project, and set aside

Pre-cut a few strips of magnets into 1.5 inches pieces, prior to starting your project, and set aside

Prepare glue gun, when ready, apply hot glue, starting on metal part of pin, apply enough glue on top and bottom of metal piece to firmly press a 1.5 inch magnet piece on top of glue, and let cool for 1 to 2 minutes.

After glue has set, you will notice excess magnet sticking out on the sides of clothespins, cut off excess magnet with an *Xacto knife, or a sharp pair of scissors for a clean look. Since I am very accident prone and lack a steady hand, I used scissors instead =:/

*Xacto knife creates clean cut edges

On the other side of the clothespin, prepare glue gun again, when ready, apply hot glue, starting on metal part of pin, apply enough glue on top and bottom of metal piece to firmly press down butterfly for 30 seconds.
